Writing vs. Typing

In today's increasingly digital world, it is often a common question to ask: should I type or write it? Sometimes this applies to an agenda; in this case, it can apply ot journaling. A commonly held belief is that writing is always better than typing. However, this is not a one size fits all rule. To decide whetehr you should journal by typing or writing is completely based on how well you know yourself and your goals.

Research has shown the pros and cons of both. For instance:

Writing by hand:
  • slower pace may equal more reflection
  • better for processing
  • less distractions
  • tactile
  • no battery or internet
  • less blue light

Typing:
  • More portable in some instances
  • Easier to search and organize
  • Quicker entries
  • Multiple devices can be used
Researchers at Georgia Southern University found that handwritten notes during lectures are better for learning and memory. While this may be known by many people, how you learn does not directly translate to how you think and process your feelings. For those who prefer taking notes by hands, maybe it could be a beneficial alternative to write in a journal so to create distance between your activities.
